Respiratory physiotherapy in gastroesophageal reflux disease
Abstract
Gastroesophageal reflux is defined as the backward flow of stomach contents into theesophagus. The main trigger mechanism is the reduced pressure exerted by the loweresophageal sphincter, resulting in unpleasant symptoms, with the most common beingheartburn and reflux, with an obvious effect onthe patient’s quality of life. Commontreatments are dietary changes and medication use. Respiratory physiotherapy now plays animportant role in the treatment of this condition. The diaphragm plays a catalytic role, as itnormally works in conjunction with the clamp, increasing the pressure exerted. Therefore, avariety of exercises can affect the functioning of the defense mechanism. Research that hasbeen carried out has demonstrated clear positive results in terms of quality of life. There is a reduction in thefrequency of symptoms and in the consumption of drugs, thus reducing the risks involved.
