Measurement of gross motor measurement in children with cerebral palsy: a case study of children with diplegia using the Bobath method

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to study gross mobility in children with cerebral palsy.

Method: Gross motor function was assessed using the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM). The 10 children who participated in the program were treated with the Bobath method. In this study, two GMFM measurements were performed: an initial measurement before the implementation of the intervention and a final measurement after the end of 12 weeks. Two groups of children participated: in one the Bobath NDT method was applied 3 times per week (A), while in theother Bobath NDT was applied once per week (B).

Results: During the initial measurement the children in the two groups had almost the same gross mobility. however, there wasevidence of a significant difference between the two groups in terms of gross mobility at the end of the program (final measurement): in group A the average score was 81 while in group B it was 73 (T.A. 2.12). This represented an improvement in gross mobility by 12.3% in group A, compared to 4.2% in group B.

Conclusions: Overall, applying the Bobath NDT method 3 times a week to children with spastic diplegia achieves better mobility in each of the three studied sections of the GMFM, compared to applying the program once a week
